The file extension docx is associated with the Microsoft’s Office Suite 2007 which is the successor of Microsoft Office Suite 2003. It is accessed Microsoft Word, which is a word processing application with lots of in build word editing tools. Near 2000 Microsoft used such file formats which can be executable and opened only by its corresponding Microsoft products. For instance *.doc files can be viewed by Microsoft Word, *.xls can be viewed by Microsoft Excel, *.ppt files can be opened by Microsoft Powerpoint and so on. By then it was encoded in binary format. At last Microsoft too agreed to give its file extension which is supported in any platforms, it initiated its XML (eXtensible Markup Language) based file format.
What about previous versions?
Since the previous version like Microsoft office 2003 and below will not support such XML based file format it is necessary to save the file in *.doc format instead of its default *.docx format.
